DAY 1
Dual Speaker Panel
Two professionals will present contrasting perspectives on diversity and equity, illustrating how academia, government, and industry each contribute to shaping urban environments, all within the larger framework of society and environmental sustainability.
-
Academia: This segment highlights the role of universities in generating knowledge and fostering innovation for sustainable urban planning. We will explore how academic research collaborates with local actors and global networks to address societal challenges such as water management and environmental resilience. The case of Indonesia will be used to contrast local research partnerships with larger academic frameworks.
-
Governance: Governmental organisations play a key role in implementing policies and strategies that impact society and the environment. In this session, we will explore two perspectives on how governmental practices shape the urban environment: a small-scale community-focused approach from Colombia’s informal settlements and a larger-scale, government-funded municipal organisation in Vienna. This discussion will highlight how policies can either integrate or overlook marginalized communities and ecological considerations.
-
Practice: In the final segment, we will examine how industry and professional practice contribute to urban design and development. This includes the roles of private urban planning firms and architecture offices, both of which must balance economic objectives with social equity and environmental sustainability. The contrasting approaches will feature a firm working on regional and municipal scales using conventional design methodologies and a community-based architectural practice that prioritizes local knowledge and resource use.
-
Open Discussion
World Café
A smaller, focused discussion format where students will explore the presented perspectives in depth. Here, they will critically discuss how academia, government, and industry must work within the broader societal and environmental context to create sustainable and equitable urban solutions.
U&L WEEK 2024
WHEN PATHS CROSS: PERSPECTIVES ON EQUITY AND DIVERSITY
For this event, we aim to create a space for meaningful dialogue where diverse perspectives on urban experiences, practice, and theory come together in contrast, highlighting the crucial role of equity and diversity. The event is designed to introduce students to various approaches and challenges in shaping inclusive urban environments, while encouraging critical discussions on social justice, urban development, landscape, policy and design.
November 6 - 10
The world is facing critical challenges related to social justice, migration, inequality, and climate change, where vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected. These pressing issues require collaborative efforts between universities, industry, and government (the Triple Helix) to create inclusive and equitable urban spaces. Yet, this collaboration does not occur in isolation. It is shaped by the broader context of civil society and the environment, which wrap around and influence the Triple Helix, ensuring that urban development reflects the needs of communities and is responsive to ecological concerns. Recognizing this interconnectedness is crucial for addressing urban challenges holistically and equitably.
DAY 2
Collaborative Collage
Students will collaborate on a large visual collage (10M) to reflect their insights from the event. This creative process will help them synthesize the roles of academia, government, and industry, while also considering the overarching influence of society and the environment on urban development.
MEDIUM TRIP TO BERLIN
Let's go for a long weekend to the exciting German capital and a hub of nightlife and urban design: Berlin! To unwind after Q1 and P1, and after the theoretical inputs at the UL week, join us on this three day trip organized by Polis. We will visit an office, the forum for architecture, and examine the urban design of nightlife during the day (and also the night ;) You will also have time to go out and explore the city on your own or in small groups, this is a stress-free programme, to recharge and reset your mind before uni starts up again!
ABOUT URBANISM & LANDSCAPE WEEK
The week sees a series of curated lectures, seminars, workshops and debates which revolve around a particular theme in an attempt to understand routes, practices and issues of contemporary urbanism while trying to find its future possibilities. The goal of the UL Week is to bring together people interested in future development of urban landscapes and the built environment together and provide a platform for discussion from creative and technical practices. Each year the UL Week formulated a theme based on current or controversial discussions about the built environment by consulting different professional and students. This theme is the guiding factor around which all the events are positioned.
